Wesentliches Förderkriterium ist, dass die Initiativen beispielhaft aufzeigen, wie Zusammenschlüsse von Menschen das Leben in unserer Gesellschaft mitbestimmen und mit gestalten können. Mit der Starthilfeförderung will die Stiftung Mitarbeit Bürgerinnen und Bürger ermutigen, sich an Gemeinschaftsaufgaben aktiv zu beteiligen und demokratische Mitverantwortung zu übernehmen. Dabei steht die Förderung von Aktionen und Initiativen im kommunalen Raum im Vordergrund. Die Stiftung Mitarbeit fördert im Durchschnitt ca. 50 bis 70 bürgerschaftliche Initiativen, Vereine und Projekte pro Jahr mit einer finanziellen Starthilfe. Die nächste Antragsfrist endet am 29. August 2016.
